View TPP Through a Bit of the Lens I believe to be President Barack Obama & then Decide YEA or NAY

Full Disclosure: I voted for President Obama – twice!

Secretary of State John Kerry is my former United States Senator!

I support the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in the context of a 21st Century setting of the global table based on the values and the principles of the United States with the potential of moving our nation closer to the President's vision of peace and prosperity in collaboration with like-minded nations

and, I believe the President deserves to be heard before the masses render their yea or nay on TPP.

Allow me to lay out a bit of the process that brought me to my pro-TPP conclusion:

Many have said there is no “Obama Doctrine,” but I beg to differ. I think the “no Obama Doctrine” conclusion is often drawn because it cannot be explained via clever messaging but an inability to message moving from the 20th Century to the 21st Century re foreign policy in sound bites does not render a message non-existent –

it just leaves us to do our own homework and to draw our own conclusions in the context of a vision that flows from our leader of choice.

I am very interested in the challenges of living in a “global world,” a much smaller world by it's very nature, so when I heard Barack Obama speak at the 2004 Democratic Convention and when I heard his passion and his belief in the constitutional intent of the United States a question was raised for me: How is all of this going to work in a new Century?

(It was a question I put aside during the reign of George W. Bush.)

During the 2008 Democratic Nomination process, I supported Hillary Clinton and when Barack Obama won I knew I was going to support the Democrat but I also knew I had a lot of work to do to get to know him as well as I knew Hillary -- so I paid close attention to him and it became a habit of mine!

He was hinting at a brand new foreign policy for the United States, based on engagement first and, although I hadn't connected the dots yet, I took notice. Once I began to connect those dots the Obama Doctrine became the lens through which I viewed all of what he said until finally concluding bringing The Common Good to the global table was going to be the foreign policy of this President -- an American constitutional scholar who believes in the work of perpetually creating a more perfect union with a deep understanding that the codified General Welfare of the nation is not only critical to us but that it also had game-changing potential for unavoidable globalization if done intentionally.

The Obama Doctrine is, simply stated, as interpreted by me:

The seeking of peace and prosperity via bringing The Common Good to the global table and engaging with like-minded nations to build strong economies, strong economies that naturally call for the implementation of an array democratic principles to succeed.

Frankly, it seems to me that President Obama, via the ratification of the TPP, is handing us the best chance we have to lead the world in peace and prosperity in the 21st Century (think high tech manufacturing (as in 3-D printing), a strategic foreign policy shift away from what appears to be a region of permanently warring states to a region of non-warring states and competition with China on a whole lot of fronts -- for example).

And now, for just a few major pieces that begin with who President Obama the American in Congress was and end with who President Obama the American in the Oval Office is, the one who is bringing America to the global table in a way that really can limit war:

Senator Barack Obama's July 2004 Democratic Convention Speech

Excerpted:

I believe that we have a righteous wind at our backs and that as we stand on the crossroads of history, we can make the right choices, and meet the challenges that face us.

President Barack Obama's June 2009 Cairo University Speech

Excerpted:

All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort -- a sustained effort -- to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.

President Barack Obama's December 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Speech

Excerpted:

So yes, the instruments of war do have a role to play in preserving the peace. And yet this truth must coexist with another -- that no matter how justified, war promises human tragedy. The soldier's courage and sacrifice is full of glory, expressing devotion to country, to cause, to comrades in arms. But war itself is never glorious, and we must never trumpet it as such.

So part of our challenge is reconciling these two seemingly irreconcilable truths -- that war is sometimes necessary, and war at some level is an expression of human folly. Concretely, we must direct our effort to the task that President Kennedy called for long ago. "Let us focus," he said, "on a more practical, more attainable peace, based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions." A gradual evolution of human institutions.

President Obama's 2015 National Security Strategy as laid out by National Security Adviser Susan Rice

Excepted: ( From the original document which can be found here )

Any successful strategy to ensure the safety of the American people and advance our national security interests must begin with an undeniable truth—America must lead. Strong and sustained American leadership is essential to a rules-based international order that promotes global security and prosperity as well as the dignity and human rights of all peoples. The question is never whether America should lead, but how we lead.

Even as we meet these pressing challenges, we are pursuing historic opportunities. Our rebalance to Asia and the Pacific is yielding deeper ties with a more diverse set of allies and partners. When complete, the Trans-Pacific Partnership will generate trade and investment opportunities—and create high-quality jobs at home—across a region that represents more than 40 percent of global trade. We are primed to unlock the potential of our relationship with India. The scope of our cooperation with China is unprecedented, even as we remain alert to China’s military modernization and reject any role for intimidation in resolving territorial disputes. We are deepening our investment in Africa, accelerating access to energy, health, and food security in a rapidly rising region. Our opening to Cuba will enhance our engagement in our own hemisphere, where there are enormous opportunities to consolidate gains in pursuit of peace, prosperity, democracy, and energy security.

On all these fronts, America leads from a position of strength. But, this does not mean we can or should attempt to dictate the trajectory of all unfolding events around the world. As powerful as we are and will remain, our resources and influence are not infinite. And in a complex world, many of the security problems we face do not lend themselves to quick and easy fixes. The United States will always defend our interests and uphold our commitments to allies and partners. But, we have to make hard choices among many competing priorities, and we must always resist the over-reach that comes when we make decisions based upon fear. Moreover, we must recognize that a smart national security strategy does not rely solely on military power. Indeed, in the long-term, our efforts to work with other countries to counter the ideology and root causes of violent extremism will be more important than our capacity to remove terrorists from the battlefield. The challenges we face require strategic patience and persistence. They require us to take our responsibilities seriously and make the smart investments in the foundations of our national power. Therefore, I will continue to pursue a comprehensive agenda that draws on all elements of our national strength, that is attuned to the strategic risks and opportunities we face, and that is guided by the principles and priorities set out in this strategy. Moreover, I will continue to insist on budgets that safeguard our strength and work with the Congress to end sequestration, which undercuts our national security. This is an ambitious agenda, and not everything will be completed during my Presidency. But I believe this is an achievable agenda, especially if we proceed with confidence and if we restore the bipartisan center that has been a pillar of strength for American foreign policy in decades past. As Americans, we will always have our differences, but what unites us is the national consensus that American global leadership remains indispensable. We embrace our exceptional role and responsibilities at a time when our unique contributions and capabilities are needed most, and when the choices we make today can mean greater security and prosperity for our Nation for decades to come.

And now you can find the recently released TPP agreement here

But, just before you click on the link take a look at this map and keep it in mind as you contemplate the TPP in the broader context of both domestic AND foreign policy:

^^^ Note: TPP nations include Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia, Brunei, Australia, Singapore, Canada, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand and Peru (with a commitment from the Indonesian President that they are also coming on board).

Also note: Using the South China Sea as a focal point, while considering that Russia and China hover above all of them, the nations surrounding the Sea go like this ~ above: Vietnam, Japan; in the middle, Malaysia; below right Brunei, Indonesia; below, further to the right, Australia; below left, Singapore and; much further left, Africa.

Not terribly scientific, but it speaks to me!

Frankly Speaking: Mid-Week Grievance ~ Democrats, We Have to Fuc*king Vote!

No one, especially me, is a perfect citizen.

In fact, I will confess here and now that I have missed a vote or two in my lifetime when I missed the date to request my absentee ballot, for example! Fortunately for me, I've never done it at a time when my vote would have been the deciding factor. But it could have been and I know that and I have vowed to never let it happen again … unless I'm unconscious, of course.

Having said that, I suspect not every single one of the millions of eligible voters who have not voted falls into the once-in-a-while I screw up category and I just think we can do better. In fact, we have to do better or our system of government is going be lost to us – and it will be because we have voluntarily surrendered it.

I know. It sounds so dramatic!

But it has been and it continues to be my observation that conservatives have been fighting against the principles of our Constitution since the pre-ratification debate and they have never stopped fighting.

They hate our system for a lot of reasons but primarily because it is based on The Common Good ~ just listen to them speak ~ and they no longer hide it from the rest of us!

(I suspect that is on the top of the to-do-list of the new Speaker of the House ~ to persuade the newer GOP members to keep their political truth to themselves as well as to mimic the Democrats political truth with the promise that they just might win the White House in 2016 if they can just mind! It is a strategy that has served them well!)

If we do not want to lose our way of life, we have to focus on winning and in my experience that translates into supporting Democrats who are most likely to win.

Having said that, I am linking a great piece that provides a glimpse at potential GOP Senate weaknesses in the 2016 Election that just might allow Democrats to take the Senate back because I do believe that if we become better strategists, as opposed to dreamers, we most certainly can win!:

There’s another pivotal election next year besides the White House. The Senate is up for grabs, and the landscape a year out suggests the Democrats could win control away from the Republicans. …

Oh. One more thing, just a quick look at the some of the early numbers I've seen in relation to the GOP governorship win in Kentucky yesterday:

Matt Bevin: 511,771
Democrat: 426,964
Eligible voters: 3.2M
Voter turnout: 30.7%

Watch Kentucky. I'm afraid we are going to see a bit of what the GOP dismantling of our system will look look like very soon.

My End of Month Democratic-Party-Related Favorite Shareable and Sometimes Actionable Posts!

(I've been so wrapped up with timely stuff it's been way too long since I done this monthly post!)

Typically, this is more of an intensive working blog because I am of the mind that Democrats need to share Democratic favorite posts with Democrats because we can not depend on main stream media to move our messaging for us but today the focus is to give a glimpse of what President Obama has been up to the past month with just a peek at how the work of the leader of the National Democratic Party is tied into the National Democratic Platform, making the whole Blog a shareable, as opposed to individual posts ~ so please share!

I am also of the mind that if we are to be an informed Democratic electorate we need to begin with becoming informed Democratic Party members, beginning with an understanding that we share a Platform and that all members are welcome to join in the process of defining said Platform.
Note: It's not too late to be a part of the creation of the 2016 Party Platform, as opposed to the whining we've been seeing by some lately, not to mention that whining after the fact is an insult to the 100's of Democrats who have done the work, a distraction from winning and an embarrassment to watch. So, sign on and do the process work or hold your peace until the next election cycle. Just sayin'. (You will find a  link below that will provide you with a connection to Democratic State Organizations if you are not connected with yours yet and you'd like to be.)

The World’s Climate Targets: Major Steps Toward our Climate Goals

As President Obama noted on his recent trip to Alaska, urgent action on climate change is essential for the health, security, and well-being of Americans and people around the world. That’s why we’ve been taking unprecedented actions to reduce our own emissions at home while working with the international community to build a durable framework for reducing emissions globally.

We now have an opportunity to take a big step toward the goal of an ambitious and effective global framework for addressing climate change. In less than a month, more than 190 countries will converge in Paris to finalize a new global climate agreement. We’ve learned the lessons of previous rounds, including the importance of encouraging countries to take the lead in developing their own targets for curbing emissions and putting those plans forward early.

This strategy has been highly successful so far. The emphasis on transparency and nationally-determined ambition has pushed countries to put their best foot forward and make clear how they’re contributing to securing a sustainable world for future generations. We now have post-2020 climate action pledges on the table from more than 150 countries representing nearly 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

...Like other global challenges, climate change won’t be solved all at once. No single action, no single government, and no single summit will decisively address one of the greatest threats of our time. But an ambitious agreement in Paris would be a turning point. It would show countries that if they act, their partners and competitors will do so as well. And it would send a clear signal that nations are committed to tackling climate change and that there is no going back. ...

Advancing Open and Citizen-Centered Government

Today, the United States released our third Open Government National Action Plan, announcing more than 40 new or expanded initiatives to advance the President’s commitment to an open and citizen-centered government.

The release is part of our membership in the Open Government Partnership — launched by President Obama and seven other heads of state — which in just 4 years has grown from 8 to now 66 countries. Member countries and their civil society partners are all working to increase public integrity, enhance public access to information, improve management of public resources, and give the public a more active voice in government processes. As a member of the Open Government Partnership, the United States issues Open Government National Action Plans outlining ambitious commitments to advance open government every 2 years.

The release of this plan coincides with the Open Government Partnership Summit taking place this week in Mexico City, where more than 2,000 open government reformers from member governments and civil society organizations are gathering. ...

Writing the Rules for a Global Economy (A weekly address...)

In this week's address, the President spoke to the merits of the high-standards trade agreement reached this past week. The Trans-Pacific Partnership helps level the playing field for American workers and businesses, so we can export more Made-in-America products all over the world, supporting higher-paying American jobs here at home.  The President acknowledged that past trade agreements have not always lived up to expectations, but emphasized that this is a good deal, with the strongest commitments on labor and environment of any trade agreement in history. It reflects America’s values and gives our workers the fair shot at success they deserve. The President encouraged everyone to read the agreement, which will be available online well before he signs it, and looked forward to working with lawmakers from both parties as they consider and approve this deal.

You can view the Summit video here

I'm including a snippet of the invitation to the White House Summit on Worker Voice because I think it's a great example of engagement with The People that happens all the time via this administration:

The President has been wanting to have the conversation we're hosting today for a long time. He's been mentioning it in meetings -- and in remarks -- for months.
Today, it's happening.

Right now, a group of workers, union leaders, worker advocates, and forward-thinking businesses are arriving in the East Wing of the White House. They'll have breakfast together, hear from the President and Vice President, and then hear from one another. They'll break out into groups. They'll ask each other questions and share their own personal stories. Then they'll engage in a conversation with the President. We'll be focused one singular mission:
How do we empower workers' voices in our 21st Century economy?

We're calling it the White House Summit on Worker Voice, and you can follow along and add your voice to the conversation, no matter where you are. You can participate from your desk or your kitchen counter. …

Watch President Obama's Statement on the Shooting in Oregon

(A snippet): This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in America.  We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction.  When Americans are killed in mine disasters, we work to make mines safer.  When Americans are killed in floods and hurricanes, we make communities safer.  When roads are unsafe, we fix them to reduce auto fatalities.  We have seatbelt laws because we know it saves lives.  So the notion that gun violence is somehow different, that our freedom and our Constitution prohibits any modest regulation of how we use a deadly weapon, when there are law-abiding gun owners all across the country who could hunt and protect their families and do everything they do under such regulations doesn’t make sense. …

First of the Month Favorite Hillary Clinton Posts ~ Shareable and Sometimes Actionable Depending...

^^^ No additional commentary from me required...

You can share this on Twitter here

FYI: This is a working Blog! because Democrats always need to work at messaging Democratic Truths...

But nobody needs truth messaging more than my candidate for the 2016 Democratic Nomination -- Hillary Clinton – who is not being honestly described by many, including but not limited to opposition and talking heads, as the long-time progressive Democrat she is, in my humble opinion of course, making Hillary the focus of my recurring First of the Month Favorite Posts Blog!

As we begin to close out a highly successful October for Hillary, please use the direct links provided and share and/or to take action when and where appropriate.

Take the Best; Leave the Rest. But push the truth!

For your own information, my personal habit is to share directly from Hillary's social media platforms and and other favored sites, as well, to save favorites on my Desktop for later sharing. I create a Hillary memes folder and drop them into the folder and when I have a block of about 15 minutes of time I share them all directly from that folder to my preferred social medium platforms.

( * Today I am providing direct Facebook, Twitter and Google+ links on which you can click and share with your friends. To share on various platforms of your own choosing, you’ll have to do the annoying thing and download and save and re-post...)

Just for fun, the crowd's response to Hillary's entrance at the Iowa Jefferson-Jackson Dinner last night --

Hillary Clinton Gives Speech At Jefferson Jackson Dinner In IOWA

"...I'm running as a proud Democrat..."

"...I've spent my life working for children, women, families and our country from the kitchen table to the peace table..."

My two cents: Democrats have 8 years of progress to build on (despite GOP nullification of a 2X, duly elected American President!) That is not cause for revolution -- that is cause for winning and for building on what we've got.

Favorite Anti- GOP Shareables! Remembering Who the Real Threat to the United States is. And it is not Hillary!

Perhaps the most timely meme to share as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to testify before the GOP PAC in the House of Representatives next week where she will be subjected to a familiar tactic of past witch trials when women were strapped in chairs and dunked in ponds and if they drowned they were innocent and if they survived they were guilty (you know, that black magic stuff!) ~ all at our expense.

FYI: This is a working Blog! because, it seems to me, Democrats need to be reminded who the real threat to the United States is and it is not other Democrats.

Please use the direct links provided and share and remind others of who the real threat is AND of what the GOP stands for.

For your own information, my personal habit is to save favorites on my Desktop during the week for later sharing. I create a GOP memes folder and drop them into the folder and when I have a block of about 15 minutes of time I share them all directly from that folder to my preferred social medium platforms.

Today, I have shared some of my favorite Anti- GOP memes to my Twitter timeline. All but the first one are courtesy of the DNC Facebook Page. To share on Facebook, Google +, etc. you’ll have to do the annoying thing and download and save and re-post...
